Press Release - Dublin Accord Accreditation

In June 2013 the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) was awarded full signatory status of the Dublin Accord. This means that international recognition of the NZDE (Civil) programme delivered by the New Zealand Institute of Highway Technology (NZIHT) is now formalised.

In October 2012 IPENZ’s accreditation process was observed and assessed by a Dublin Accord Review Panel comprising of delegates from member countries. NZIHT was selected by IPENZ to be one of two New Zealand institutions to undergo an IPENZ accreditation visit to demonstrate the rigours of their accreditation process to the Panel. As a result of this IPENZ visit, NZIHT was awarded IPENZ accreditation for its delivery of the NZDE(Civil). NZIHT was one of two New Zealand providers to receive an accreditation Certificate from IPENZ at the annual awards ceremony held in Wellington on Friday, 17 March 2013.

NZIHT is currently the biggest provider of NZDE (Civil) in NZ and the largest “distance learning” provider. Its highly successful block course delivery model enables students who are unable to engage in full-time studies to study NZDE (Civil) on a part-time basis. To provide wider access to this programme, the study blocks forming part of this model are being delivered in several locations throughout New Zealand. Over the past 10 years hundreds of students throughout NZ have availed themselves of this opportunity to acquire this qualification while they work.

With IPENZ now receiving full signatory status, it means that from 2013 NZDE (Civil) graduates from NZIHT will enjoy the international recognition afforded under the Dublin Accord. The Dublin Accord is an agreement between signatory countries for the international recognition of Engineering Technician qualifications. Qualifications accredited or recognised by signatories are mutually recognised as being substantially equivalent to accredited or recognised qualifications within their own jurisdictions.

There are now eight Dublin Accord signatories namely UK, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, USA, Australia, Korea and NZ.
